SERIE IDENTIDADES/ IDENTITIES SERIES
One’s identity is shaped by several facts. Being born in a certain place and time shapes our way of thinking. In my case I was born in the North of South America, in a country called Venezuela in 1978. In Venezuela around 3% of the population is aboriginal, most of them live in the Amazon jungle in the state of Bolivar, in a very precarious and dangerous situation. Some of their children even lack legal identity, some of them are born in illegal mines or simple remote communities where there’s no civil record office to register the newborn. Getting basic medical assistance is sometimes impossible due to lack of medications, doctors and appropriate infrastructure. Education is also a big necessity among these communities.
This series of painted baskets made from natural weavings by indigenous Eñepa clashes the modern concepts directly with artisanal artifacts raising questions about who we are, what we like, who we want to become and who we’ll be. An invitation to relate concepts such as nature, technology, culture and national identity.
Abstract geometric art of the kinetic and op art movement, is deeply embedded in the Venezuelan identity. Using artisanal artifacts such as wapas ties two important and yet very distant cultural identities. It also speaks about two different realities of the same nation.
Some of the artist’s profits from this series will be donated to Asociacion de Damas Salesianas (America Developing Smiles in USA); foundation that works along with the indigenous communities in Maniapure, Bolivar state in Venezuela. The main objective of these organizations is to provide vital health services and education to native remote communities in Maniapure, Venezuela.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born and raised Caracas, Venezuela under the influence of kinetic art.
Based in Caracas and Miami, Florida.
Her artistic development first started in the photography field but soon she discovered the digital world.
Marianne Sucre’s recent work can be described as digital, graphic and abstract art with a strong influence of kinetic and op art. She uses color and shapes to create visual effects that involve the viewer with the piece.
Marianne combines theory of color and saturated finishes with order and movement at the same time to represent feelings, energy and life itself creating her own dialogue.
